How It Works

1 Enter Your Holding

Input the metal type, total weight, and purity percentage. The calculator automatically converts between different weight units (oz, grams, pounds, kilograms).

2 Pure Metal Calculation

The calculator multiplies your total weight by the purity percentage to determine how much pure metal you actually own. Example: 1 oz of 75% purity = 0.75 oz of pure metal.

3 Melt Value

Multiply pure metal weight by the current spot price to get intrinsic melt value. This is the minimum value your metal is worth if melted down for raw material.

Formula

Melt Value = (Total Weight × Purity) × Spot Price

Key Terms

Melt Value (Intrinsic Value)

The raw metal value if your item were melted down and refined. This is the floor value of any precious metal item. Coins, bars, and jewelry with this value typically trade very close to melt value with minimal premium.

Purity (Fineness)

The percentage of actual precious metal in your item. Gold is often 999.9 (99.99% pure), silver coins are typically 99%, and jewelry is often 58% (14K) or 75% (18K). The remainder is alloy metal (copper, etc.).

Spot Price

The current market price for one troy ounce of pure metal. This is the wholesale price that dealers pay for raw metal and serve as the baseline for calculating dealer premiums.

Troy Ounce (oz)

The standard weight unit for precious metals. One troy ounce = 31.1 grams (different from regular ounces used for everyday items). All spot prices are quoted per troy ounce.
